Social Capital
At Xiente, social capital is more than a concept—it’s a cornerstone of our strategy to break the cycle of poverty. We define social capital as the relationships, networks, and connections that individuals can leverage to access opportunities, share resources, and build collective strength.
They help you be seen and they don’t let you go. It’s a great feeling.
Why It Matters
Families living in poverty often depend on informal support systems to meet daily needs—sharing childcare, housing, food, or information. These existing networks are powerful, but often limited in scope. That’s why Xiente works to enhance and expand social capital across communities.
Research shows that cross-class networks, mentorship, and community collaboration are critical for economic advancement. When individuals are connected to broader, more diverse networks, they gain access to job opportunities, financial tools, and systems of support that foster upward mobility.
The project helped me realize that I am a part of something and that I can do better.
Our Vision for Children, Youth, and Families
Xiente aims to build inclusive social networks that empower all generations to succeed:
-
Children benefit from early connections through quality education, mentoring, and safe learning environments.
-
Youth gain access to career exploration programs, peer support, and cross-class engagement that prepares them for long-term success.
-
Families expand their support systems through peer-led groups, neighborhood collaborations, and resource-sharing initiatives that foster resilience and reduce isolation.
Community is not community anymore like how I grew up. This is a start.
Through our Connect strategy, we host inclusive networking events, facilitate cross-class collaboration, and create peer support groups that strengthen trust, community, and access to opportunity.
What We Strive to Achieve
By investing in social capital, we aim to:
- Expand cross-class social networks for 90% of families engaged in our programs
- Host community-led networking events that reach over 1,500 residents in five years
- Foster lasting relationships that enhance economic, emotional, and educational outcomes
I used to not go out much. Now I attend networking events and feel more comfortable talking to people.
These efforts are grounded in our belief that communities hold the answers to their own transformation—and when people are connected, possibilities grow.
